Home / The Ongoing Challenge

Each year, colleges and universities are becoming more dependent on a reservoir of talented and skilled students to serve in critical leadership roles within: Recruitment, Student Life, Activities Board, Student Government, Club, Residence Hall and Orientation Programs. But, capable student leaders do not just emerge. Instead, they are developed as a result of a coherent and integrated training program such as the Student Leadership Development Model, developed over a twenty-five year period, by Don Doran and Dan Duffy.

According to Dan Duffy, "Don and I share the belief that students can benefit tremendously from an interactive and experiential process that enhances personal awareness and expands skill acquisition." Don Doran further commented, "We consider leadership to be an influence relationship. Even though people do not always occupy 'management' positions in organizations, it is clear that we all, at the very least, lead ourselves in relationships with others."

In reflecting on her leadership program experience, Ocean County College Phi Theta Kappa Tau Iota Chapter President, Sue Taylor said, "The unique learning process allowed participants to become actively involved during each workshop and integrate concepts presented with their own personal knowledge and experience. An environment was created for fifty students, faculty and administrators to learn from and contribute to each other's personal development."

Program Goals
  1. Personal Introspection: To enhance each individual's understanding of self through personal introspection and opportunities to address and reflect on the questions of: What Am I Doing Here?, Who Am I?, and Where Am I Going?
  2. Skills Acquisition: To provide an opportunity for individuals to learn about leadership concepts and strengthen their skills and abilities through participative and experiential learning activities.
  3. Development of a Sense of "Team": To identify and experience the benefits of teamwork and to broaden a sense of organizational interdependence.
  4. Problem Solving Strategies and Interventions: To learn about and apply problem identification, problem solving, and decision making strategies customized to address specific problem areas in the organization.
